What to Expect During Patio Construction
Having a new patio installed is an exciting step, especially when you can start seeing your outdoor area take shape. If you’ve never had a patio built before, it’s natural to wonder what actually happens once construction begins.
While every project is slightly different, the installation process generally follows a clear sequence. Knowing what to expect can make the experience much easier and help you understand how your new outdoor area comes together.
Before Construction Begins
Before your patio installation starts, the design, engineering and required approvals will be completed and emailed to you.
A final site check is likely to be carried out before the builders start. This ensures measurements and details such as colours are correct before ordering your materials. At this appointment discussions such as; access, material delivery, power and water and time frames will take place.
Preparing the Site
Before construction begins it is important for the home owner to consider how they can prepare the site for install. Do you need to move furniture or perhaps cover a BBQ that cannot be moved. Are their plants or pot plants in the way which can be moved to help the builders with a smooth install. If you have animals please keep them out of the way as they can be a tripping hazard and their will be power tools. Also picking up faeces in the area before the builders get there is extremely helpful. As a rule of thumb – the less that is in the area for the builders to work around the easier it will be.
On the first day of construction, the installation team will assess the work area and prepare the site.
Depending on the patio design, this may include:
- Marking out post locations
- Confirming heights and levels
- Preparing access for materials
- Protecting nearby areas where required
Installing the Patio Posts
One of the first major stages is installing the structural posts.
Post holes are positioned according to the engineered design and the posts are installed and secured.
Getting the posts correctly positioned and level is important because they form the main support structure for the patio.
At this stage, the project can start to look quite different very quickly.
Building the Steel Framework
Once the posts are in place, the main patio framework is installed.
This can include beams, rafters, fascia beams and other structural steel components depending on the patio design.
For a gable patio, the roof structure and gable framing will also start taking shape during this stage.
The framework is carefully installed according to the engineering specifications to ensure the finished structure is strong, straight and properly supported.
Installing the Roofing
Once the main structure is complete, the roofing sheets or panels are installed.
Depending on the patio you’ve selected, this could include:
- Colorbond roofing
- Insulated roof panels
- Polycarbonate or translucent panels
- Skylight sections
- A combination of different roofing materials
This is often the point where the patio really begins to feel like a new outdoor living area.
Gutters and Downpipes
Gutters and downpipes are then installed to manage rainwater from the new roof.
The location of downpipes will generally have been considered during the design stage.
Depending on the property and approval requirements, stormwater connections or soakwell work may need to be completed separately.
Finishing Details
Once the main structure and roof are installed, the team will complete the finishing details.
This may include:
- Flashings
- Gable infill panels
- Trims and cappings
- Final fixings
- Sealants
- Touch-ups
- Cleaning the work area
Small finishing details make a big difference to the overall appearance of the completed patio.
What Should You Expect During Construction?
Like any building project, patio construction will involve some noise, tools, materials and activity around your home.
There may also be temporary disruptions to access through the backyard or side of the property while materials are being moved into position.
